Soil Preparation

Proper soil preparation is the most important element in establishing a healthy, long lasting bluegrass plant! You are transplanting a plant, and root development depends solely on the soil it is planted in. If you have very sandy soil, add two inches of either black dirt or clay. Till to a depth of six inches mixing into the clay. Every site is different and if you do not know what type of soil you have, a soil sample analysis is advisable. Rake and smooth the soil, removing rocks, roots and large clods. Roll the area and reveal low areas that need more soil. Eliminate drainage problems by having the soil slope away from foundations, etc. Keep the grade one half-inch below sidewalks or driveways.

Sod Installation

Install your lawn immediately upon delivery. Begin watering the lawn within 30 minutes of installation. Sod is a living plant that requires ground contact and moisture to survive. Begin installing the sod along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or sidewalk. Butt and push edges against each other tightly, without stretching. Avoid gaps and overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in brick-like fashion, using a large sharp knife to trim corners, etc. Avoid leaving small strips at the outer edges as they will not retain moisture. On slopes, place sod across the slope.

To avoid causing indentations or air pockets, avoid repeated walking or kneeling on the sod while it is being installed or just after watering.

During the first three weeks, avoid heavy concentrated use of your new lawn. This gives the roots an opportunity to firmly knit with the soil, and insures that the turf will remain smooth.
